A Simple Guide to Reading a Menu, from Starters to Dessert

Knowing how a menu is organized helps you order a balanced meal and discover dishes you might otherwise miss.

Most restaurant menus follow the order of a meal. Starters and salads come first and are meant to open the appetite. They are usually lighter, so they work well on their own for a quick bite or to share while you decide on the rest.

Main courses are the center of the meal. Look at how each dish is described: the main ingredient, the way it is cooked, such as grilled, roasted or seared, and the sauce or sides that come with it. If a description is unclear, ask the team. They will be glad to explain.

Seafood and pasta dishes are often listed in their own sections. They can be a good choice when you want something lighter than red meat, and many are made to order, so they may take a little longer to reach the table.

Desserts come last, and they are easy to share. If you are a group, ordering one or two for the table is a nice way to end the evening without anyone feeling too full.

Badges such as "Chef's Pick", "New" or "Offer" are there to point you to dishes worth trying. Use them as a starting point, then choose what you really feel like eating.
